The intricate and complex processes of industrialization which led to a segmentation, specialization and "rationalization" of institutions also eroded the beliefs in a cosmological orders of traditional societies. Separate institutional spheres acquired a degree of autonomy which permitted them to develop their own "rationally" founded legitimations and to withdraw, as it were, from a hierarchically interlocked system of representations of society as a whole. The accompanying increased division of labor, the increase in specialized role performances, the diversification of loyalty claims, to mention but a few manifestations of modernization, have accordingly affected the coherence of individual biography as well as the microcosmic character of the small communities. Both have lost their "wholeness."

Contemporary man no longer "naturally" sees himself as a useful and necessary member of a social whole geared into a meaningful plan of existence within the totality of a cosmic or divine order. The transcendence-continuum which in traditional society reached out from the center of individual life within the community, through the various spatial units of outer society into the encompassing order of the cosmos has been broken. We may speak of a transcendentia interrupta which perhaps more than any other single phenomenon of modern life accounts for the "great feeling of meaninglessness, a search for something to grab hold of, some unifying thing," experienced by modern man.

The separate institutional spheres which appear to function according to their own laws and pursue their own separate goals alternately or in combination dominate various parts and particles of man's daily life. Like a Kafka-esque creation man may try to come to terms with them to get them in his grasp and fight imaginary and losing battles against them in the process. They continue to make compelling demands on him. Yet none of them provides him with knowledge and guidelines for fitting his whole life experience and eventual death into the order of larger society and beyond it. After satisfying the institutional claims, he is left free—a freedom, it would seem, for which in the course of history man has fought persistently and passionately—to pick up the loose strands of his existence and fit them together as best he can.
